Picture a Day #109 – A Jumping Spider

I’m still trying to rehabilitate my garden in time to plant veggie seeds for Earth Day on Sunday. While I was surveying the wreckage, I noticed this spider. When it noticed me, it jumped away. Cute little bugger!

Picture a Day #108 – A Media Sampler (update)

Yesterday I was enjoying a fellow blogger’s post, and became inspired. Susan Geckle is creating 6×6 inch works of art to send to Rochester Contemporary Art Center’s 6x6x2012. It sounds like a fun way to get myself motivated.

But what to do? While I ruminated, I prepared several 6×6 inch pieces of watercolor paper. Then I ruminated some more.

This morning, I decided to go back to Prismacolor pencils. I drew a portion of a photo that I posted last Friday. It was fun, but not such a great idea to use the colored pencils on the watercolor paper. Also, the middle ground is muddled. This was an excellent learning exercise…I have updated this post, because it looked so bad close up!

Not sure what I’ll do next, but I plan to use a variety of media, and hope to finish six (you can enter up to ten) in time to mail them by the deadline (postmarked no later than May 5th). More rumination required!

Picture a Day #107 – In My Garden

Finally, I was able to work in my garden today. I have been dodging rain showers and juggling other activities, but today it called to me, and I answered!

There is a lot of work to do. Things got out of hand during the winter. But I made good progress, and I was happy to discover this large earthworm. It’s nice to have the company of helpers in your vegetable garden!

Picture a Day #106 – Penne Rigate

As you may recall from previous posts regarding cooking, I prefer baking to stove top escapades. But we had leftovers to use, and it was my turn. So I assembled my materials and my courage!

My husband does the grocery shopping. It is a game he plays to see how much money he can save, and what he can find that’s a good deal. He is a master at locating mis-marked beef, as he was a butcher in a previous career.

Anyway, to please me, he picked up some whole grain Penne Rigate. We had leftover mozzarella that needed to be used, and a jar of marinara. Here is my creation, which takes about 1 hour to prepare:

Penne Rigate

In a medium skillet, saute 3 cups of veggies (I used 1 medium zucchini, grated, half of a medium red bell pepper, diced, and about six diced mushrooms) in 2 tablespoons olive oil over medium heat until soft, about 5 minutes.

Remove from pan, and brown 3/4 lb lean ground beef with 1 clove garlic, about 10 minutes.

Prepare half of a 13.25 oz box Ronzoni Whole Grain Penne Rigate, about 10 minutes.

Combine the meat and veggies with 1/2 of a 24 oz jar of Marinara Sauce. Let simmer 5 minutes. Drain pasta.

In a 2 quart baking dish, layer sauce, pasta, and grated mozzarella cheese. Suit yourself how you layer, but start with sauce and end with cheese.

Bake covered at 350 degrees F for 40 minutes. Uncover for the last 10 minutes if desired.

This is actually a 1 1/2 quart baking dish, and I used almost a pound of ground beef. So I couldn’t fit all of the pasta. It was a bit meaty and saucy, but tasty! I have adjusted the recipe accordingly. You could also add more veggies and ricotta or ? and leave out the meat. A very versatile dish. Enjoy!

Picture a Day # 105 – Bagging It

I have been working on my felted wool bag all week, and it is slow going. But there are enough separate pieces that I see progress at each step!

You can follow my progress by viewing step 1 here. Step 2 was the handles, and step 3 is the back. I used the seed stitch for the handles and the rim of the bag, and for the body I am using a stockinette stitch (knit on one side and purl on the other). I picked up some d-rings at the fabric store, and it looks like I’ll have enough yarn for the back, front, and shoulder strap (2 skeins) – fingers crossed!

Picture a Day #104 – Happy Friday!

Today is Friday the Thirteenth. I don’t have a huge problem with the number thirteen, but I keep a close eye on it. Because you just never know. We went on a brief excursion today, and I have to say that things went well. Thirteen can be a lucky number. It’s all in your outlook.

We managed to wander around a flea market without getting rained on, and I took some interesting in-between-the-showers photos of the oak-covered hillsides of Mendocino County. I even found some picture frames for half the price of the already reasonable flea-market prices!

We made a couple more stops on the way home, for lunch and errands. It didn’t rain on us until we were in our car, and even then it wasn’t serious rain. Only some April showers. Happy Friday!

Picture a Day #103 – More Than Just an Empty Box

I grew up in a hobby family. My father always had a vegetable garden, and he enjoyed landscaping the yard. My mother baked, grew and arranged flowers, and was a backyard birder. My sister sewed and baked. My four brothers built things-from model cars and airplanes to musical instruments, skateboard ramps, and gocarts.  We had musicians and artists among the six of us children.

I began receiving art supplies from my parents after finger-painting on the sidewalk with mud. I moved on to a variety of crafts, and to this day I alternate between them.

Never wanting to be pinned down to one thing, I earned a multiple subject teaching credential because I wanted to teach so many things. To me, everything is connected. When I ended up teaching math, I always managed to bring science, art, and other subjects into my lessons.

One of my hobbies is collecting empty boxes. This began when I needed some materials to teach solid geometry, and now I find myself still hanging on to empty boxes, because you just never know when you might need one.

All you need is an empty box and some imagination to do so many interesting things. Most kids have played a variety of games with large cardboard boxes. They make great houses, spaceships, and sleds.

Smaller boxes from food items can not only be used for calculating surface area and volume, or nutritional values, but you can turn them into a 3D art project. Then you can write a story about it.

I created this blog because so many kids complain of being bored, and whenever I’m bored, I think about my hobbies, and making something, and brainstorm what I’ll make and what materials I’ll use. It changes all the time, and that’s what makes hobbies so interesting to me: endless possibilities!

Picture a Day 102 – Felted Wool Bag Step 1

The first thing that I did once I decided to make a bag like the one my daughter brought home with her this week, which you can see here, was photograph, draw, and measure it. Next I knit a test piece and put it through the washer and dryer a couple of times. After that, I decided to change the size of my needles.

Then I knit what will be the bottom of my bag. I used size 9 US (5.5 mm) needles, and medium (4) wool yarn. This piece is 20 stitches across, and has 75 rows. It measures about 6” X 12″. I used two strands of yarn, one Natural Mix and one New Denim, and I wound them together to produce a marled effect. I also used a seed stitch (knit one , purl one, alternating by row).

I think this will be a sturdy bottom for my bag, once it is felted. I left yarn at each end of this piece to attach it to the sides of the bag. Next, I will make the handles for my bag, and then the shoulder strap, using the same yarns and stitch as the bottom piece. I may need to reinforce these with twine, but I will meditate on that!

Picture a Day #101 – A Spider and a Spout

I couldn’t resist taking a photograph of this itsy bitsy spider near a water spout. I disturbed it when I turned on the faucet.

Picture a Day #100 – It’s in the Bag

My middle child is visiting this week. It’s fun to have her home. She brought a cool bag with her that I hadn’t seen before. I love it!

She bought it at Target, and it probably wasn’t very expensive, but it’s a great bag. Now I want one, too. But I want it MY way. So, I’m going to make one.

I took photos of it and measured it. Now I’m going to make one for myself out of felted wool. I don’t know yet what I’ll use for the lining and straps. First things first. I love a new project!

Of course, I fully realize that I have to finish all my other projects, as well. This could take a while…
