Picture a Day #239 – Abstract Watercolor

Yesterday I began another abstract watercolor. My first step was Cadmium Yellow Pale.

Next I used Permanent Rose.

I often enjoy beginning a painting without knowing where it will take me. What fun!

Picture a Day #238 – Summer Unwinding

It’s beginning to feel a bit like fall, although there are still about three weeks left of summer. The bees in the marigolds are still humming away.

Picture a Day #237 – A Toad in the Laundry Room

I left the laundry room door open while I was watering my garden this evening, and a California toad wandered in. It may have been attracted by the warmth of the dryer. But it got stuck in a corner and couldn’t get out.

After photographing it, I opened the door and encouraged it to leave. It tried to climb the wall, but couldn’t figure out where the door was. So I lifted it up and pushed it out with a plastic container cover. It hopped away, and may have learned to stay out of my laundry room in the future!

Picture a Day #236 – Turkey Tale

It’s very quiet here at the cabin. I can hear the children at the nearby school when they are out for recess, but the rest of the time it is very still. So when something is nearby, I hear it very distinctly, shuffling in the oak leaves that cover the ground, or rustling in the dry grass.

When I looked outside to see what was about, I discovered two dogs from next door. One large black lab and one small patched hound were trotting through the grass. They looked like two characters from an animal adventure movie. When I yelled “hey!” at them, they stood at attention. I told them to go home, and they ignored me and went about their business. Oh, well.

A bit later, I heard something outside my bedroom window. Thinking it was the dogs again, I peaked out, and discovered a huge tom turkey on the hillside under the oaks only twenty or thirty feet away. Naturally my camera wasn’t ready, having the wide-angle lens on, so by the time I changed lenses and got out onto the porch, it was far up the hill, and in my haste and the poor light, I took an embarrassingly fussy photo. I include it here, to prove my vision, and will refer to it as “the one that got away.”

More rustling a bit later, and I was back outside, peering up the hill. A female this time, scooting away.

More rustling, and I discovered that the turkeys had been roosting in a nearby oak, as they hopped down and hustled away. They all were smaller than the first bird, so probably hens.

I know they’ll be back. Next time, I’ll be ready for them!

Picture a Day #235 – Antiquing Online

Since we moved into a little log cabin in the foothills, I have been searching online, on Craigslist, for a kitchen table. I know what I want: a small, round oak table to go with two oak chairs that we already have.

I found what I wanted, but it was too far away to retrieve conveniently. So I kept looking. This morning, I found another small table. Not exactly what I was looking for, but it looked like it would fit and blend in with our rustic decor, so I called the phone number in the listing and arranged to look at it.

Only eight miles from the cabin, I paid $35 for this antique game table. It is the perfect spot for Scrabble. This unique piece of furniture fits perfectly in our tiny space, and will still be useful after I find that oak table. I’m still looking, and I love a treasure hunt!

Picture a Day #234 – Playing with Color

Some time ago, I ordered some watercolors online, and one of them didn’t come. Prussian Blue was on backorder for weeks, and I finally received it in the mail about a week ago. So of course I had to try it out!

Here is an exercise that I did with Alizarin Crimson and Prussian Blue. I just like the look of it. Maybe sometime it will turn into something more. This is my second catch-up post, so now I am only 8 posts behind!

Picture a Day #233 – In Search of a Color

The other day, as I was organizing my art materials, I thought of an idea for a children’s picture book. I haven’t attempted anything in this genre in a very long time. I would love to be able to write and illustrate a book. It is a dream of mine that until this week has largely been in the dreaming stages.

So I sat right down and began to type. A page and a half of text later, I began to see the illustrations that would go along with it. The next day, I added and revised, and now I have a story about a girl who discovers a new color.

Next I began an illustration. How do you create a color that doesn’t exist? Still working on that one. Here is a link to The Write Stuff for anyone in search of children’s writing inspiration. And now for today’s picture:

This is a detail from a recent project. Wouldn’t it be amazing to find another color in the rainbow? Where would it fall on the spectrum?

Picture a Day #232 – Collage Geometry

Here it is again-my geometric project. Now I have added details with opaque watercolor (gouache). I also taped on shapes cut from handmade paper to be attached permanently when I am finished with everything else.

I’m still thinking about how to use my Prismacolor pencils to add even more detail.

Picture a Day #231 – More Triangles in a Tiled Plane

Here is the next installment of my most recent project, which I posted yesterday.

After I added crimson to the primary colors in my tiled plane to create purple and orange, I added blue and yellow to create green.

There is more repetition of shapes here, but it’s hard to find any real pattern. When I concentrate on the darker tiles, the lighter ones fall into the background. Next, I want to use Prismacolor pencils to create detail that will bring the darker tiles forward even more.

I am also considering using some opaque watercolor (gouache) on this. I may even add some collage in order to increase the depth.

Picture a Day #230 – Painting Triangles Inside Rectangles

This is my first double post day (although I did post twice on the 18th because I posted around midnight). I am attempting to “catch up” with myself in order to reach 366 posts by the end of the year. Now I am only behind 9 posts!

The other day, I used a painting by the Abstract Expressionist Wassily Kandinsky to inspire me. I did a study with geometric shapes, in preparation for the subject of today’s post. I wanted to use geometric figures in a somewhat organic way, and as I worked yesterday my concept unfolded. Here is the beginning of my project.

I drew a grid of 24 rectangles with pencil on Arches hot press watercolor paper. Then I painted in the rectangles with primary colors. I used Cobalt Blue, Ultramarine, Cadmium Yellow and Cadmium Yellow Pale Hue, and Alizarin Crimson. I did not use a set pattern, but there is already some repetition besides the rectangular tiles.

Next I created triangles and secondary colors by overlapping crimson on blue and yellow. I added more repetition of shapes and colors. At this point I was “flying by the seat of my pants,” and having a lot of fun!
