Picture a Day #269 – A Captionless Photo

This lizard is desperately in need of a caption – or not. The truth is I got too close and it retreated behind this lichen-encrusted rock. It kept peeking out, and when I approached took cover.

Picture a Day #268-Evening Light Watercolor Painting

Here is the beginning of my painting that was inspired by the evening light in the trees behind the cabin where I live. I posted a photo of this area recently. Then I took my new portable easel and watercolor block outside to capture the scene en plein air.

I used Cadmium Yellow Pale, Prussian Blue, and Alizarin Crimson to begin my painting.

Next I will layer colors to shape the scene and then add details.

Picture a Day #267 – Better Than Butter

At the market today, I found some pears at a very good price. They were lovely yellow Bartletts, ripe but still firm. But what would I do with them? I already had some green pears that were ripening very slowly…

Then I remembered a recipe that I posted on this blog last year for Apple Butter. I decided to buy six of the pears and make Pear Butter.

First I cored, peeled, and sliced the six large pears. Then I tossed them gently with 1 teaspoon of ground allspice.

I put them into a heavy-bottomed saucepan and simmered them on very low heat covered for about 45 minutes, checking and stirring every 10-15 minutes. I removed the cover and continued to simmer the pears about 15 more minutes, until the extra moisture evaporated.

This recipe yields about 2 cups (16-18 oz) of Pear Butter. Cooking time will vary depending on the thickness of the pear slices and the consistency of the pears when you stop cooking them.

When cool, I put them into 2 sandwich sized recloseable bags, carefully removing trapped air, and stored them in the freezer. Put your fresh or defrosted Pear Butter on pancakes, toast, ice cream, or anything else you desire!

Picture a Day #266 – Summer Wildflower

I found this wildflower in my photo files from this summer. Another Sierra foothill beauty!

Picture a Day #265 – In the Night Oaks

When I was younger, I was obsessed with drawing trees. In honor of my youthful hobby, and the fact that I am surrounded by an oak woodland, I have embarked on a new project. I spent the last couple of days trying to capture the light in the surrounding trees at different times of the day.

Last night I happened to glance out the window before retiring, and the moon, which is almost full, was illuminating the dry grass/weeds on the hill above the cabin. The oaks were dark creatures reaching upwards toward the night sky.

I tried to memorize the scene, and this afternoon I sat on the porch and attempted to re-create the image in my mind while observing the hillside vegetation in very different light. Not exactly the point of en plein air painting, which is supposed to capture the light of the moment.

Oh well, here is what I created. I completed the watercolor painting in about two hours, which may be a record for me. It was very warm out, so the paint dried fast!

I began by sketching the scene with my favorite Prismacolor pencil, Goldenrod. Then I put down a minimal layer of Cadmium Yellow Pale mixed with Yellow Ochre.

Next I used Prussian Blue to begin creating contrast.

Alizarin Crimson helped to create the contrast I wanted.

I continued mixing and layering my colors. Then I added some detail with smaller brushes.

This represents the feeling I got when I saw the hillside in the moonlight. It glows!

Picture a Day #264 – It Ain’t Over Yet

It’s officially Fall here, but the temperature is still in the 80’s. So I planted some flower seeds, and within a couple of days they were up and at ’em. Nothing like some Autumn color to put a little zing into the season. I like channeling all that solar power into a flower garden!

Picture a Day #263 – Evening Light

The evening light here in the Sierra foothills, on the edge of the conifer forest in the oak woodlands, is amazing. I captured it at the end of the day as it illuminated the hillside in back of our cabin.

Picture a Day #262 – A Pair of Wings

While basking in the end of summer sun along the North Yuba River near Downieville this weekend, I photographed this California Sister butterfly as it briefly touched down on a large river rock.

Picture a Day #261 – Jumpin’ Jackrabbit

This Black-tailed jackrabbit was sitting very still on the hillside outside the cabin until I took its picture.

Then it leaped up the hill to find another place to chill.

It was large and lean, with amazing long ears!

Picture a Day #260 – A Visit to Downieville

Today was a perfect day, the first day of Fall, to take a trip into the mountains. We drove north from Nevada City, California on Highway 49 for about an hour, into the North Yuba River canyon to the tiny hamlet of Downieville.

Downieville is a historic gold mining town, and although it remains unincorporated, it is the seat of Sierra County. Today it was full of mountain bikers, motorcyclists, and tourists out for a drive and lunch, or an ice cream cone with a view of the river and forested mountains.

We stopped for a quick hike down to the rocky shore of the North Yuba River before winding our way to the cozy village full of weekend visitors.

Then we enjoyed lunch at a local diner and admired the Downie River as it flowed through town.

At the museum we found artifacts from the California Gold Rush.

Then we explored a waterfall on nearby Pauly Creek.

This was a relaxing way to spend an afternoon. There was a lot to see and do in this tiny town, and I am already looking forward to another visit!
