This was the first weekend that we stayed at the cabin near my husband Sam’s new job in the Sierra foothills, instead of driving home. We decided to do a little exploring, so we headed over to South Yuba River State Park on Saturday evening to look at the covered bridge.

The 20-mile portion of the South Yuba River canyon included in the park is home to Bridgeport covered bridge, the longest single-span covered bridge in the world.

This area is open from dawn to dusk. We were losing light rapidly as the sun dipped down below the canyon walls, but managed to take a few decent photos and stroll along the sandy, boulder-strewn riverbed. The water was so low it’s hard to imagine that the bridge was nearly washed away in a flood. We are looking forward to visiting this area again!
